I know where your tongue is firmly planted - but I’m really not expecting much from this project. It’s far too rushed and the thought of Duran Duran covering one of the best known, loved political songs of the eighties fills me with dread. I mean come on guys, show me the evidence. Use organic drums for Ghost Town? Course you will. Tell me something that’ll help change my mind. Who’s doing the arranging? Is Nile going to lay his funk all over the rhythm section? What a mess! I know I know, Someone, somewhere is going to say ‘he hasn’t heard it yet so…’ Sorry, but I’m going on past form and the last two albums don’t give me cause to think any differently. As for the reworking of classics, it seems a trend at the moment. Somebody mentioned Simple Minds earlier in the thread. They did a great job tbf. I also love Simple Minds. But they are in a minority. Most shoot themselves in the foot - like U2 recently. And this is not a comparison contest - I never understand why DD are compared to U2, who are just leagues ahead at every juncture in their musical career - even a failed album is still a success! Lol If I’m honest I think it’s too soon for a DD album - for it to have any real quality. It goes against the grain of their usual approach to an album. But I understand why they’re doing it - or being led to believe why they’re doing it. I would hate to think that any success is going to be led by the Andy Taylor cancer story. It’s lovely that Simon and Roger rekindled the flame with Andy at this very odd wedding. Who am I to judge? 😉 But then of course everybody gets judgemental on why Nick and John didn’t turn up. Or did they turn up? I can’t be bothered with any of it. Apparently Andy is now being treated by a ‘wonder’ drug that will extend his life by five years - which is just the best news for him and for his family. Not the fans - because that would be selfish. If we’re not talking months then there’s no need to rush an album. Besides, Andy will want to concentrate on his own solo work which he’ll probably be more inclined to promote - as it’s his own artistry at work. f___ing Halloween. Stupid stage costumes to hide the musicianship and then some really bad live covers by a band that like to have ‘fun’. 😜 Come on John, glass half full. It’s a new release after all and at least the songs being covered will have more sense than a Public Enemy / Grand Master Flash rendition. What do we have to lose as fans? How about self-respect? Mind you, I probably lost mine a long time ago. What we have to lose is another album cycle - time that the band can ill afford, wasting on some crap covers that Katy Krassner* says are excellent (*clueless). We’re not losing Andy yet. Get back to basics, bring in a producer who understands layering guitar. Just stop with this electronic bullshit. Tell Simon to pipe down on the vocal, get Andy up front and put him back in the band permanently for as long as it takes. This is their last chance of making something work. It’s working a positive out of a tragic situation. Stop f___ing about with covers and reworks and write a whole album - just them! I have not a clue why they keep doing this? I said Future Past was shit from the get go. It’s still shit lol. What’s changed? It’s why everybody’s f___ed off from this board. People who cared. Real passionate writers. The management don’t care. They just tread water - too afraid to make risky decisions. Just as long as they’re covering the bills that’s good enough for them. My glass was half full for a long time mate. Years and f___ing years. It became half empty when they brought beat boxes into their game. My glass became half empty when the band’s glass became half empty. Who the duck is going to remember Future Past down the line? Or Paper Gods? f___ it, there’s always going to be people who like that stuff. And good luck to them - but mark my words, nobody will care in five years. I understand your point to a degree mate. But I have my marbles to lose if I get a third offering of bile - bile when compared to previous albums of a bygone time. Even Erasure are making decent progressive electronic music. Have a listen to The Neon. It was that good they made a separate album of remixes. Anyway, how does the song go? I would say they’re a hard habit to break!

Now I know DD is very close to releasing /hearing a new single and album as early as this evening possibly.. Because Skinburn, I mean Skin is STILL..still ranting about FP and PG's. Contrary to a few here..Many on this board are STILL listening to FP and still loving it...me included..why I just saw this review the other day on social media: This is truly one of their best albums. I’d put it up there with Rio and their first album, Duran Duran. It’s a great blend of the modern and the retro, and classic fans will love it. Several very catchy songs that are contagious. Very cool to hear this musical evolution without fully letting go of their roots. I love it! Bring it ON!!!! Dom on FB said they spent not just 1 Day Rehearsing but 2 days! I think we will hear a new song TODAY! Fingers crossed... DD Forever! With or Without Andy!!! Preferably with Andy!

I am so pumped for this project. It’s spontaneous, relaxed, and will contain new music with Andy. Will every song be a gem? Probably not but no doubt there will be several that make it worth a list.
The constant negativity from some is becoming tiresome.

My feeling is that this album will turn out to be the Thank You they should have made. The 3 new songs will obviously be highlights, particularly their first original song with Andy since 2004... interesting that there's a 19 year gap from AVTAK to Astronaut and another 19 year gap from Astronaut to Black Moonlight! This album will have taken roughly the effort of an EP, so take your pick and make a perfect EP playlist

Fair enough SB, I think I agree on most of your points of view. I'm not a huge fan of Future Past either, although I do like Paper Gods. There are two things that puzzles me with people wanting a return to roots / guitar based album. The first one being that the band released AYNIN and it seems fans were not satisfied with that (or they want AYNIN part II). And the other one being that the band themselves are not interested in a guitar based album, and its hardly a secret. The next DD proper album could even be more electronic based than FP. I think that the only feasible scenario where they release a more organic sound album is if they release Reportage (I think it's possible given that AT is in good terms with the band now and with better health)

Don't worry, we'll find out in october that they scrapped the album and will make a new one without any covers/reworks

The comparison with U2 is not so out of place, as this project reminds me a bit of "Rattle and Hum" which wasn't very well received by the fans.. Actually, I'll enjoy everything DD make except for brickwalled sound and Simon trying to be Whitney Houston. There is too much Simon in DD's music since reunion… Just to add.. But in U2’s defence (without getting the facts and figures out) R&H still sold very well! Lol R&H delivered some of U2's best songs. Desire, Hawkmoon, When Love Comes To Town, God, All I Want Is You, Angel Of Harlem.

I think that the only feasible scenario where they release a more organic sound album is if they release Reportage (I think it's possible given that AT is in good terms with the band now and with better health) The guitar on AYNIN couldn’t be further away from my own expectations. I was hopeful that Graham Coxon was going to be able to sprinkle some magic. Turns out the band just wanted to be able to say Graham Coxon played on Future Past. Why else would you pay big money for the services of a virtuoso? Perhaps he’s not the virtuoso we all thought he was? Oh, without a doubt you’re right. They won’t ever revert to a plug and play band. They were never a plug and play band until Warren joined anyway. And people can say what they want about the 90’s. I find it bizarre that people who detested the 90’s are allowed to be negative about that era but the rules change to suit the weather. Pathetic. Not pointing fingers at you - just to the Pleasantville subscribers amongst us. The 90’s were a period where the band were brought out of their comfort zone because there was no way Warren was going to put up with beatboxes and triggers to fill in the cracks. Which is what they do now live. They have more chance of releasing an organic album with Andy up front in the mix than a crap EDM backing track similar to Love Voodoo or TMI. Reportage? I think it’s old news now. Maybe change the lyrics to what’s happening currently? Maybe that’ll work? I reckon Andy has a lot to say right now. They all will have a lot to say. If Andy is ok with it then give him an opportunity. If he can’t make a tour, well at least he’s put a stamp on an album he’s been allowed to open up on. And I would go to a show if he was performing with them. No question. To be honest, I can’t see this new album being riddled with EDM. I really can’t see Andy being a part of such a crap sound. It’s why he quit first time round. I just can’t bear the thought of covers without Warren. I can’t explain why. Well I can, but it won’t be very constructive.

The covers they did with Andy are quite outstanding though: Fame, Make Me Smile & Instant Karma... maybe add Get It On & Harvest For The World which are also superb. Spellbound should be a major highlight based on the live version.
