I just went back to www.fitday.com. You input all your food intake for the day and it really helps to keep down on bad eating habits. It worked for me a while ago, but then I got lazy.

Hi. This is my sorta intro/2 cents post. I'm the same name everywhere but hardly every post anywhere. So hello.
But back to the topic. I'm not a trained dietitian or personal trainer. I can only speak from my experience. I know what works for me which is based on a ton of research I've done to loose my own weight. What Ruth says is 100% correct.
You have to eat in order to loose weight. That's just the way your bodies work. You HAVE to eat breakfast, you HAVE to eat often, you HAVE to drink water, and you HAVE to sleep.
Along with satiating hunger, water hydrates your body. Hydrated muscles work more efficiently at burning fat. Oh and if your in a plateau, ease up on the cardio and lift more weights. More muscle mass (especially for women) burns more calories even at rest. That's one of the premises behind Pilates.
Eating Breakfast is super critical. What I found was that if I wasn't hungry in the morning (which was always my big opposition to breakfast) was because I was eating too much too late at night. Once I eat a proper portion of dinner and gave my body a decent night's rest, I found that I was starving in the morning. That's good, that's the way it's supposed to work. Your body's been working all night while you've been sleeping, so it should be hungry by morning. Eat.
You have to setup a safe place for yourself. I have no will power to speak of. A huge hurdle now that I'm looking to stop smoking. But I have had to set myself up in a place where the ice cream is out of the house, the cookies are not on the shopping list, all there is in the house to munch on is fruit and veggies, fish and chicken. I got rid of the soda and the white bread (100% whole grain is a better option) the pasta, all of the stuff that are my triggers to overeat. I found other "comfort" foods to help me. Nonfat yogurt with granola instead of ice cream. Oh and for the person trying to cut out dairy out of their diet, unless you have some allergy or medical condition that prevents you from eating it, don't leave it out of your diet. Go for low fat options of milk, cheese, etc. Trust me, you need the stuff in that dairy. It sucks for my kid, who is in the throws of grief because we can never go to Burger King again. But someone reminded me of the fact that I am teaching my child proper eating habits by doing this. Something that we keep her from
I too was borderline diabetic and do have high blood pressure from the extra 150 pounds I was carrying around (I have lost 60 of that so far). But from exercising, the blood sugar is back to normal, the blood pressure is getting better, and the cholesterol is getting there (slowly). But the other benefit to exercise is if you suffer from depression as I do, it will help more than any pill you can take. So you have to find some way to work exercise into your day. If that means getting up 30 minutes earlier to get a walk in, or pushing yourself out the door as soon as you come home, then do that. I know, easier said than done. Believe me, I know. But the thing to keep in mind is that successful weight control (diet, exercise, etc) is a lifestyle. You have to get yourself into the mind set that getting your exercise is as much a part of your day as brushing your teeth.
Anyway, enough of my pontificating. Good luck to the rest of you, I know how hard weight loss is. And if all else fails, there’s always Meridia. That stuff is wonderful!!

Man...I am having a tough time of it. Within 4 months of having my daughter, I was 30 lbs lighter than my pre-pregrancy weight. I kept it off for 8 months and kept losing. My maternity leave finished and within that 2 month period, I've gained 9 lbs back! geesh! It's so hard sticking to a diet when your co-workers ask you to lunch (for bad food on purpose) and there's always treats in the lunch room. It's tough to stay on track. I'll have to muster up all of my strength to get back to where I was and keep losing. I never want to go back to where I was so I have to nip it in the bud NOW!

I'm trying to eat better this year and lose some weight. I think some meds I'm taking are making it harder, but what can you do. It's good to see I'm not alone. My husband is joining me to give me support.

Corene- Kudos! not only to you for your weight control but to you for teaching your daughter good eating habits. she might be pissy about them now, but when she is older she will be greatful. My mom was a healthfood nut, but not until my brother and i came along. her first two children were given whatever they wanted to eat - no holds barred on the sugar. They are in thie 40's now. unhealthy. (not that I am any better) I tend to lean towards god food rather than junk because of my mother all those years ago. I am not the thinnest of this bunch. If I followed my own advice I might be a size 12 or 14. Right now I don't have a car and am in a new town. I walk everywhere, it is putting a dent in my weight. (toning some under used muscles) Before I came to this town, I ate less and drank more water. I added magnesium tablets to my diet and I lost the swell around my ankles. (and about 8 lbs) Kudos to everyone for trying to do something good for themselves.

Johnslady: I know how it is. When I had my daughter (who just turned 11 last month), the weight just melted off. But if you think about it, most of it was water, the rest is burned off because you have this new little thing that's eating up all of your time and attention. Eating for myself took second (or third) to luxuries like taking a shower or getting sleep. My weight piled on with Rebecca started to become more mobile and more independent. I was able to sit and eat while she was occupied.
silverprincess: There are a lot of meds that make you put on weight or make it harder to take it off. If you haven't already looked into it, perhaps your doctor can suggest an alternate drug that doesn't have that reaction.
Ruth: I almost wish I had your mom. But while mine made us belong to the Clean Plate club and cooked nothing but good old PA Dutch/German food. She was as aware of her weight as any of us. So, when I asked her not to make her usual holiday cheesecake with the dozen eggs and 2 lbs of cream cheese, she understood. But boy do I miss it.
I also have issues with water retention and take a diuretic everyday to help with it. But I found that it wasn't until I hit the treadmill that my ankles reappeared. I know what you mean about not having a car. I didn't get a car until after my daughter was born, and the walking that I used to do really helped to keep the weight down.

So far, I have lost 3 lbs this week, but I'm hoping that I won't gain it back and try and stick with my weight goal. I bought an DVD with some smiling lady and a pro skater. I know that I have to ease into it and so I will only do the training 2xs this week and try and add more next week, etc.
I have been trying to make sure I eat all food groups, though I think I've been skiping 1 meal a day, which isn't too great. Its probably best to have a smaller breakfast and two normal meals later, for me. Walking helps as well.
I can't afford a gym, but I think it is very possible to be fit without one.

Tae Bo kicks ass. that is all I will say.
I have some sort of block that is keeping me from wanting to lose weight. It might be I am being defiant from the world. I dont feel as fat as I look. LOL (I dont feel my age either) I have to ponder my thought pattern in live journal for about an hour.
I took that most recent photo of myself and slimmed down just my face in photoshop. I could be very pretty (I am cute already) but I have other issues. (dressing up like a woman feels fake to me. like dressing up, a game.) ah well..I will be in live journal hashing that crap out.
good luck, and way to go, to you all.

Well, I had an awesome dinner and the Diet Gods said "Eat Well tonight." I had two Shirley Temples, bread in seasoned oil, salad, a fancy sirloin steak with scalloped like potatos, green beans wrapped in bacon, and for dessert triple mousse cake with fresh whipped cream on the side. The dessert I actually thought there was liquer in it as I felt the caffeine. lol
