WTF is the world coming to?

Where's that eye rolling smiley? Ah there it is!
Actually the quote was "are you now a mental?"
I watched the programme and in particular, the way Clarky and May treated Hammond. The Showgirl entrance and the insults were a far more affectionate return than treating him like an invalid. They treated their friend in exactly the same way as they always had. If they'd done otherwise, I'm sure Hammond would have been offended!
My brother had an op 11 years ago to successfully remove a brain tumour. During his recovery, he told me he was fed up of everyone dancing around the issue and treating him differently than they had before the op. Everyone was being too bloody nice to him and pretty much avoiding the elephant in the room. He spent his birthday in hospital and I got him a Mr Bump (one of the Mr Men) teeshirts that also had a story book. Some of my rellies were surprised and offended on his behalf that I could be so "insensitive". The little bother (not a typo) wore it with pride. That was good enough for me.
When people go through a trauma like that, they don't want to be constantly reminded of their stoic heroism. They just want to get on with life. They'll appreciate the dodgy humour a lot more than the tearful admiration.

The handling of Richard Hammond's return to Top Gear has been branded "insensitive" and "insulting" by a charity for people with brain injury.
Headway said it had been inundated with complaints particularly over comments made by presenter Jeremy Clarkson.
At the start of Sunday's show, Mr Clarkson asked Mr Hammond if he was mental, while James May offered him a tissue in case he started dribbling.
