No, I don't think Wendy Laister should be fired. I don't know how much more exposure a band can expect when Donald Trump and some Olsen twin show up to your week-long stint on Broadway and then a writer's strike occurs.
Equally, if your working with a big name act like "JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE" and then "JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE" is not available to effectively assist in radio and television promotion. It's like forgetting the mustard and ketchup at a BBQ inside the house and leaving the hot dogs, outside, naked, on a plate(As Duranies, we're hungry, we'll eat anything....but it could have been a lot better) The closer combination of the two would have yielded better CD Sales and taster, um food.....
If your scrapping an album, it has to be with the intention of releasing something that can be more profitable for your record company; banking on T/T who didn't even do much in the end- too little, too late and a waste of time from a marketing angle.
If Wendy Laister made pure decisions, someone had to approve of them, or she wouldn't have made it this far. The SD remix is not ever going to be given to radio stations to play in heavy rotation, at least that was a smart decision. If anything, it would be b-side material. Some people actually like it...(not me, i'm just sayin'....)
Not everyone thinks of DD as an 80s band, it's just easier to promote them that way. I'm still waiting for the actual "comeback" album after TWA....Astronaut was as close as it could have gotten...oh well..

This is a very good question.
Us Brummies are desparate for DD to get a star on the Broad Street Walk of Stars in their home town. I spoke to the Manager of the company who does the stars over the weekend and they have approached DD more than once. they spoke to SLB personally on a radio show who said they'd love to do it. They've approached Wendy Laister and DD's PR guy in Bham and thats where the problem is apparently. Its all down to money..........

I wonder if it's not time to do what other important bands do, take their own bussiness and do it themselves. No managers, no labels or their own label and stop depending on ppl who only think about money or other bands that are "in" for a while.

The only thing I want to say about this rant is that the Skin Divers remix was approved by the 4 Duran's as is everything they do. They will get an offer in and will decide whether it is right for them or not. There is nobody pulling their strings and nobody else to blame. I find it ironic that a band that has produced 13 albums, 40+ singles (excluding projects which would vastly increase these figures) is not at fault for their lask of success. I mean they have completed the full college course on how to be a pop star at this stage and know enough about the industry to at the very least "understand" how to make something successfull. If more people are interested in Madonna or Coldplay than your band, thats life.... You can't force people to like you and adverts in magazines don't sell CD's. I don't know anyone who buys CD's these days (and very very few do....) just cause they saw an advery on tv or in a magazine or casue they saw a competition. Most of the few remaining CD buyers are fairly certain they like the musis or are already a huge fan.

I can't say if Wendy failed DD or not, but most of RCM's failure can be blamed on a) the music itself and b) allocation of marketing funds. Wendy really doesn't have much to do w/ promotion or publicity as those are both functions of a traditional label. There was a lot of money spent on promotion (yes, really), but it spent in the wrong areas. Making an expensive video for Falling Down was a huge waste--that kind of money would have been more wisely spent on website banner ads on oprah.com and foodtv.com, etc. As for publicity, they hit some major outlets, but the weak performance of a weak song (Falling Down) didn't do much for them. If Wendy is guilty of anything it is not having enough influence on the band's musical direction. RCM is one of my favorite DD albums, but if selling records is the goal (which it doesn't have to be), DD need to produce the kind of music that will have the broadest appeal to their core demographic. RCM, while great for someone who has a broad musical pallet, isn't going to appeal to the 40 year old soccer mom who hasn't bought a DD album since 1985. Wendy should know this and should be advising her clients of this. Maybe she did and they just didn't care. Problem is, there's a lot of money tied up in DD and these investors need to get paid. If DD don't care about sales, they should forget the singles, the videos, and sales and just make the music they want to make. With a good manager and concert promoter, they could go on for another 10+ years...

P.S. Losing Andy, while probably healthier for the band's mental health, wasn't the best PR move and certainly not healthy from a bottom line POV. That said, I'll bet that most casual fans weren't even aware he left (again). Did Wendy do everything she could to keep the band together? We may never know...

It probably was better for the band's mental health. But I'll never quite be able to shake the feeling that Andy felt slighted; and while recording for RCM, I can see why he did.
And I don't think that Wendy could have done anything in Heaven or on Earth to get Andy to stay, if he had made up his mind to go. It seems to me that his is a very strong personality. (That's not saying I think Wendy should be fired or that she should stay, either way.)
If Andy did stay--having been persuaded by Wendy and the others--had he stayed against his will; how good would the music be if you've got even one person there and their heart's just not in it?
