Dear oh dear ... Mutiny on the bounty? Sad to read this on this fanboard. If there are many people here who feel like thay, imagine what the rest of the world thinks. There are some valid points in some of the 'negative' comments though. Duran were huge in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Italy and maybe Japan. That is also where their money comes from (nowadays at least). In the rest of the world, they are being perceived as one of the many 80s band who had hits between 1984 and 1986 (but Duran did not even play a single concert in continental Europe in the 1983-1986 period). They are not a household name in many countries. In the Netherlands, for instance, acts such as Kim Wilde, UB40, Bananarama, a-ha, Simple Minds, etc. were far more popular during their haydays, and are still household names nowadays. They were also not like New Kids on the Block, Take That or Backstreet Boys in the 90s were, simply because they did not have enough hit singles over here. So that also limits the nostalgia audience. This sadly means that Duran will always be disappointed by the reception in countries other than the ones listed above. Just think how you see the aforementioned acts. Even if PO gets some airplay, it will be like a new single from Kim Wilde. They can only be really appreciated in many parts of Europe if they would play in small venues like Paradiso in Amsterdam to their hardcore fan base. But why should they do that if they still sell out arenas in the US or UK? Aha is a one hit wonder in the states...Kim Wylde has a small fan base and so did Banamara..

This is what a band sounds like that should have retired a decade ago or so. With most of it pre-recorded. What a joke. And they didn't even bother to play it in Holland, nor did they play the songs the crowd know. And that snobby attitude of Simon saying there's not many fans of DD out there. Who the f••• do they think they are? These days they're just another B- act. They f___ed it up 2 decades ago and now they're acting like they are some victim. Not to mention the whole promotion thing with the single and album gone wrong. It's best for everyone they call it quits and go to vegas for live shows playing their almost forgotten hits. Come on Dutch.. Give it a rest... They still rock live.. You are taking them not playing reflex live waaaaayy too seriously.. They still played many hits.... Duran still has a few albums left in them.. Sorry that new aha song is a snooze fest .. Horrid.. Vocals okay but the music sounds outdated.. I thought they retired?? Money ran out??? Lol

In terms of being pre-recorded, it's not a dissimilar position from the "live" version of White Lines that they released on their single 20 years back.

Wow dutch - you are one angry dude. Full disclosure, I am fine with the band not playing all of their hits. I saw the original post about the reflex and I just shrugged. But something was going on in that show where Duran were surprised by the reaction they were getting and Simon said something about it. Regarding election day - I was like, oh, I didnt realize the country never heard of the track - that must have been awful for the audience to sit thru that!. Until someone posted it did chart - and it charted well.
Regarding the rollout - we wont know what is going on or did go on until a few months. I am not too worried about it. If the song catches on with non duran fans - that is great. I do know that its too soon to evaluate Warner when it comes to Duran and Paper Gods. I do know that radio in general wants nothing to do with musicians in their 50s - although they look to be in their early 40s. I do know radio wont touch U2 anymore. I do know that cd sales are down drastically from their 1990s levels in the music industry. I do know that I am just glad that we have a Duran cd coming out - that apparently is just as good the 1st 2 albums. I do know that if this cd is average - Warner would have walked away.
But back to the title of this post - Full video Pressure Off Live. An inside story for you all - but maybe many on this board already knew this. Westone Radio did many Duran radio shows over the years. On one of the 1993 shows, Warren re-recorded his guitar parts. So Warren's guitar we hear is not the guitar that was initially recorded live. The live version of PO sounded good. I thought the 1st verse sounded better than the studio version - possibly because Simon sang a word more naturally. Of course, I can't remember what that word is at the moment:). It did remind me of Pop Trash Movie VH1 version in that adjustments were made after the song was recorded live. I liked PTM VH1 version a lot better than the album version as you could really hear Warren's electric guitar and Nicks synths. But that live track was tweaked as well before being released when it aired on VH1. I suspect the PO that the audience heard that night was not what we are hearing on this video - with many tweaks being made to it after the fact. In fact, I would not be surprised if the PO version was a sound check version with major tweaks happening after that to produce what we hear on this video clip.

Regarding election day - I was like, oh, I didnt realize the country never heard of the track - that must have been awful for the audience to sit thru that!. Until someone posted it did chart - and it charted well. It did chart, went to no. 14, but it's one of those top 20 songs that you'd never hear on the radio again after they're no longer in the chart. Like Madonna's Gambler (went to no. 9 in 1985 in the Netherlands Top 40), Monkey by George Michael (no. 6 in '88), or Bowie's Underground (no. 6 as well in 1986). I am pretty sure that for people over 40 in the Netherlands neither of these songs do even ring a bell (unless they are into that particular artist). And I have never heard them being played on the radio since. I'd also be surprised to hear these artists ever play these songs live again So although Election Day charted higher in the Netherlands than any of their pre-Reflex singles (none of the 1981-1982 singles charted at all!), Election Day is not one of the songs an 80's festival audience would appreciate. Personally, I don't like that song very much live; I'd rather have them play The Flame live And they should not do these 80's nostalgia shows like the one in The Hague anyway...

Check out A-Ha, Erasure, Depeche, etc... they are making albums they KNOW won't sell much, but they are writing music THEY want to and not collaborating with Timbaland and having Lindsay Lohan sing on their tracks. Depeche Mode KNOW they won´t sell much? ? Where on earth do you live? Depeche Mode could release an empty CD and it would sell millions before anyone would´ve noticed it. Even Delta Machin which wasn´t really their strongest outing sold 1,1 million physical copies.

Just dodging the slanging match for one mo I thought I'd post some of my thoughts, having watched that video.
First thanks for posting it, it brightened my day!
I sing in 'Duran' (www.durandurantribute.com) and so I think about how hard the songs are to sing quite often.
Pressure Off is a brilliant song and the chorus makes the hairs on my arm stand on end (really). The blend of Janelle and SLB in unison is a fine piece of production.
However, it hits a top B on the 'you' of 'up to you now' and the 'Preh' of 'Pressure off'. The sounds are not nice, easy to sing, open 'ah' sounds, but 'oo' and 'ehh' both of which any singer will tell you are less easy to sing esp high up. I doubt whether DD will continue to be able to play this without transposing it down a tone, as the band did with Wild Boys (since 1987) which also had a top B. If my band ever does this song then we will use a lot of prerecording of the high stuff in the chorus! It is, basically, unsingable, in the key it is written in, for a regular tenor (like me).
So SLB can be forgiven for only singing the low harmony of G or G sharp (as appropriate) for half of the high notes (he still sings the B of 'preh', mind). And he at least has Anna to help him!
(If anyone is interested the highest notes are roughly, in order of difficulty:-
Sunrise (all that reach up lead vox stuff over the main tune....notably missing from early choruses in Live from London!) Aynin (the high harmony..) NMOM (only an a but after multiple g's) Avtak (horrible b flats) Notorious (top a after top a) Wild boys (strident vocal in cho with endless top a's) Reflex (nowhere to breathe....) Itsisk (too much in one block)
I would add NMOM to the 'pretty unsingable' list and it is no surprise to me that DD rarely perform it.
Anyway for me nothing helps more than a v careful warm up:-)
