Here is my overall feelings about Paper Gods. It is not exactly the most band present sounding album, sounds too formulaic, and synthetic. There are a couple of songs that almost measure up to typical Duran standards, but that's about the extent of it. It has nothing with being experimental or using the latest trendy sounds. I understand not every album can be another Rio, but for me, there has to be substance within the musical structure and band presence to have some form of merit. I will deem the overall album sonic delivery crap which is a hell a lot more polite than the real word I'd rather use. As a fan who has listened to them since 81, I am no less of a fan than someone who gets a boner/tingly dewy feeling when they hear the album just because I don't like it. The mere fact that I had to listened to this album a few times to give it a fair shake is enough validation to express my point of view. Don't like that I don't like the album, then too bad and be glad you do enjoy the album. Well said stepintothefuture, well said.

its funny how Skinburn absolutely can't handle an opposing viewpoint. if someone can post how great the album is, why cant someone else say they hate it? I've noticed this too. Skinburn you seem like a big Duran Duran fan and your support is fine, but your remarks against other fans negative opinions on the album almost come off as personal attacks on their judgment and taste. If I was a new forum member who wanted to share my 2 cents, you and others would certainly discourage me from speaking my mind. Not only does he not like negative comments on something he likes, he doesn't like positive comments on something he dislikes either. See the a-ha topic for that wonderful discussion. @skinburn, you need to chill out man. You keep acting like your opinion is law and everyone else can go to hell. I've seen the attitude like this from you in several places, towards both myself and others & it's about time you've been called out on it.

No, I didn't miss the point. I know the album was intentionally created to have this sonic presentation to gear towards chart success and attract the kiddies. Even John stated that when he looked at songs in the charts, he didn't see any that contained bass guitar. I believed they tried this before with RCM and with no chart success or fan appreciation, so they lost on both ends that time. I don't hear much conventional instruments, and if so, it is so sparsely used that it isn't noticeable on a causal listening basis. As far as it being good; well that's your opinion, and you are entitled. Peace. I do love 'Change the Skyline' and 'Butterfly Girl'... Oh, RCM did have fan appreciation as well as gain new listeners. And yes it is my opinion. And your's differs from mine. Just like I clearly hear both conventional and electronic instrumentation throughout the album. And that's fine.

Phew!!! It's like a Dynasty catfight in here. I can't decide whether I should make some popcorn and pull up a chair or start fanning myself rapidly. Regardless, I'm for Team Alexis. ;-)

There has been an equal amount of "attitude" from both sides of this. It seems okay for negative views that come off as personal attacks but when people are called out on that, it turns into this. And if one can't speak their mind and stand up for their opinions, then they shouldn't be on a discussion board. I've said my piece. Oh...and close the door as well.

You agree and disagree at the same time. How is it silly but at the same time people should be able to stand up for their opinions? Skinburn does this to pretty much everyone who has any opposing viewpoint whether it be good or bad, if he doesn't agree with it, it's wrong. His last response about being called out proves his immaturity & inability to admit when he's most obviously wrong. It's not like an isolated incident with him. Skinburn, you act like a 15 year old female Duranie in 1983.

Like the album, dislike the album, whatever....we are all free to decide and express that, but not at the expense of personal attacks. We all can agree to disagree and move on.
I am not a big fan of the album, but so what, I will live and so will the others that like it. I do find some redeemable aspects of the album and try not to paint a total hatred for it.
For those that like it, great, and glad you enjoy, and for the haters, if possible, listen to the album again and try to find at least find one thing you like about it. It never hurts to add a little joy in your life.
It's only music...(shrugs)

Going back some now but I can vaguely recollect some animosity about RCM when it was released on this board.
Time flies....
