I gave it a spin this weekend and also A/B’d it with my Italian copy of Arena. Its a new mix as mentioned before but what I found noticeable in comparison with Arena, is how it’s not as loud. The bass has been brought forward and Simon’s vocals have been buried somewhat. On Arena, they are way upfront in the mix. One thing that is bugging me is the lack of hi-hat. I played my XDR cassette copy of Arena to do death in the 80s and know every little detail that Roger played. I can barely hear it but it’s the same on the Arena vinyl. I even checked the CD (the 2003 version) and it’s the same there. Perhaps the tape was better than the other formats (that’ll be a first!). Like the digital download, there is more separation of instruments compared to Arena. You can hear Nick’s synths on the ITSISK verses, the percussion is also more present. There are no sound effects unlike the digital version and they have tried to sort out the GOF bridge where it goes into the Night Version, but it’s still crap. Careless Memories has an ending I’ve never heard before.
Overall, I like it but it needs more hi-hat! It kills the flow of the songs.

The stronger hi-hat you're describing might have come from playing back the tape with the "wrong" settings, most probably playng a dolby encoded tape without having the dolby button pushed in on the tapedeck. Many walkmans back in the day didn't even have dolby.

That was what I thought too, overamplification of the higher frequencies if a Dolby NR encoded cassette is played on a tape deck without a Dolby B noise reduction option. XDR cassettes were still the cheap Type I variant though. Barely HiFi quality. There is a current resurge of prerecorded audio cassettes BTW, Madonna's new album is available on cassette

No, none of my Walkmans had Dolby NR, at least I do not recall it and even if they had I probably wouldn’t have selected it as I recall Dolby muffling the sound somewhat. Great answer. Still could have done with more Hi-Hat!

I just found a copy for $32 at a shop I’ve been to multiple times since RSD ( Homers). Don’t know if someone returned it or it was “in the back” of the shop. But I took it as a sign, finally seeing a copy of this in person months after it was released (in multiple record stores I’ve visited), that I really should own this record. It sounds great, much better than the ancient copy of Arena I own on CD!!
