Miming aside, what puzzles me the most is why was the intro for Union of the Snake messed up throughout a whole series of concerts in 2006
Here's an example from Warsaw, the same issue in the Athens one.

Very Brian Eno. Nothing wrong with that!

I wonder if that had more to do with bringing Dom in for those shows somewhat last minute, as opposed to the synths and anything else. There were some similar issues with his performances with the band in March of 2005, particularly during Careless Memories, where the timing for certain intros were a tad off at the start of them. I'm guessing that was just due to the fact that they didn't get as much time to rehearse with him.

I imagine UOTS isn't the easiest beginning for all other instruments apart from synths to come in on in a tight manner on key
It's not like the drummer can tap to 3 before the song begins
If my memory serves me correctly AT had once said that ITSISK also a difficult one for all members to start tightly with

It must be good to be in Duran Duran. Even when you make mistakes you have people making excuses for you. Oh this chord is uncommon, we haven't had enough rehearsal time, the beginning of the song is too hard and the poor drummer can't count us in. I'm sorry guys - if we're going to start looking for reasons for mistakes how about we just start with the obvious "they're human and they occasionally will make mistakes".
The band have probably played Union Of The Snake at least a thousand times since the song was written. There are countless examples on Youtube of the band sounding just fine when starting off - as long as Roger is paying attention he just plays a small drum-roll and then JT and the guitarist go off that.
I for one LOVE that it isn't perfect! This ties in to the "What do you want from a DD live concert?" thread where I want to see and hear rawness from the guys. Normally Union isn't one of my favourite Duran songs, but that linked video sounds really cool and I really enjoyed it. Certainly the intro isn't so bad that you'd grill the band over it, and to be honest if the link hadn't been posted I don't think my ears would have started bleeding or I would have even noticed anything much wrong in the first place.
I WANT Duran to test themselves musically and instrumentally. If they're half the musicians we believe them to be then I don't think that is asking too much. I hardly think that 36 years after Union Of The Snake was written the band are nervous or undecided exactly how to start this "difficult" song lol!

Very Brian Eno. Nothing wrong with that! Apart from the fact that Eno was actually controlling the analogue synths (back in the days when they did not even come with a keyboard). Nick is just trying to look interesting. And the comments by Mark Tinley illustrate that NR is also not the least interested in the sounds and technical aspects of synths either ('he doesn't have the time'). So he is neither Rick Wakeman nor Vince Clark
