That's not a bad thing but many people would complain because they don't get breaks. I am tired of people getting more in taxes that they paid in because they have kids. Tell me about it! A flat tax would eliminate that though. No breaks for anyone. Everyone who works pays. It's only fair. We all use the resources. We should all pay something. Do you know that some people get an $8000 "refund" when they paid in a very, very small fraction of that? I know people who know exactly how much they can make in a year to get the maximum EIC, so they work for 4 months a year then quit their job and live off welfare. Then they get this huge refund. It's crazy! Meanwhile, my dh has 40% of his paycheck taken every week (this includes medical insurance) and we're hoping to break even when we file. We pay a ridiculous amount of taxes while watching those who do nothing get the money we work for. I work too but am not taxed as hard as him because I don't make as much. So we get to pay even more when we file because my income bumps us up into a higher tax bracket. Awesome! I'll get to watch the people I know completely waste their huge tax "return" and in a month call me asking for a loan because they can't buy something "for the child" in the household. I had to quit making loans to them because it was like pulling teeth to get them to pay me back. They actually feel I owe them that money because we have more income than them. I hate tax season.

I too know people who work the minimum amount of days who get that EITC. One was my druggie former best friend. A couple of years ago I made a small amount and got hit for $800 in taxes, money I had to borrow. In Illinois everyone is highly taxed and it's unfair.
I-70 you are right, it's not fair to to those who can't have kids. I don't know if I can or not (my doctor says more than likely)but if I don't have kids why should I pay more in taxes than some welfare mother with 10 kids, as the case in many areas.

Obama was going to win all along. That's why the republicans sent in the second string. You won't see any strong candidates until 2016 or '20. The republican party upper echelon knows this, now you do too.
I mean really, do you think a Mormon 1%-er has a chance? A fundamentalist pushing the christian idea of sharia law?
A thrice-married adult version of Eric Cartman?
A racist old man that sucks up to the 1%?
And for the Pauliticians out there - he knows he won't win. He's VERY well aware of that. He's just making noise and drawing attention to his cause so that it stays on the front page. Expect that creepy son of his to make a bid in the next two Presidential elections.

What gets me is that Obama shouldn't be such a shoo-in. He's had a pretty shaky three years. If the Republicans had a candidate who was fairly popular in the GOP, wasn't crazy, and had some solid plans to fix the economy that sounded sane, the GOP might have actually had a chance to beat Obama.
It amazes me that they had three years to find that person and couldn't do it.

If you're a kingmaker you'd be in no hurry to replace Obama. He's the only choice put forward on offer. Romney is just pure backup and theater. Another 4 years is what the US and world is likely to get. I think this is important too, because some still have to overcome that inertia in really wanting change. More wars, more dwindling jobs (people who says otherwise are way off track) and a grand total of 16 years of Bush/Obama and the country will be ready for a revolution.

It's almost a joke the candidates between Gingrich being a hateful person and a racist and Romney being a rich guy and making comments about how the unemployed are lazy and all the variations, and none of the others having a chance. People are disgusted with both parties but all the studies I've read are that people are more disgusted with the Reps than the Dems. Btw, Nightboat everytime I hear you mention Eric Cartman I laugh. I think he would be a better choice than Gingrich.

I think he would be a better choice than Gingrich. I have been pretty good about watching the deRhodes and keeping up with things the candidates are saying and I can't remember Romney saying the poor are lazy. Let me reiterate that I do not like Romney or Gingrich. I just like the truth to be known about people in general. I'm not saying you are saying things that aren't true. I'm sure you've heard something that was twisted around to be made something it wasn't. And it's possible I missed something. Reps are attacked for no good reason. For example: An AA woman came to Romney and said her electric was being turned off (or was off). He paid the bill and got her electric restored. He was called a racist for doing this. I saw one woman on tv that said it was reprehensible and she couldn't stand even hearing the story because it made her so sick. Newt called Juan Williams by his name-Juan...and was called a racist. It's being said he speaks in racist code and calling Juan by his name was racist. Newt said many poor children don't understand work. This is true. I've talked at length about a welfare family I know. The household consists of-grandmother, mom, uncle and daughter (9 years). No one in the family works or has worked since this child can remember. She has absolutely no idea that once you become 16 or so, it's time to get a job. She doesn't realize ANYONE has a job. The concept just escapes her. Though what he said has been twisted all sort of ways, I understand what he's saying. And no, I don't speak racist code. This family is white. The ONLY thing I like about Newt is that he will attack the media. No one knows anything about these candidates if all they're hearing is from the liberal media, edited youtube clips or word of mouth. People take these stories and roll with them without realizing it's either taken out of context or completely made up. Btw, I have no problem with being rich. I hope to be rich myself one day. I hope no one hates me because of it.

I hope no one hates me because of it. He said something to the effect that if one is poor they can only blame themselves. I can't find the article now but I remember thinking that sounded like someone out of touch. It could be exaggerated by the media because they do lie, but still something that bothers me. While we all know this is true in some cases it's not true in all cases. With the economy the way it is many people are struggling and we need someone who understands this. I don't think anyone in power truly understands and that's the problem (and yes I include Obama as being out of touch). I don't think Romney is a racist. As for Gingrich, I understand part of where he's coming from, I just wish he had been clearer on not bringing race into it. I will agree though that the media twists comments made about welfare as being anti black which has never made sense. I know plenty of lazy people on welfare but none of them are the working poor I have also known. The working poor are hard workers and the ones I knew rarely take welfare. I know many upper class black families as well. I will say though that the whole welfare system is messed up and the whole unwed parenthood (which is causing a lot of the problems)is out of control in Illinois. I moved out of an area because it was becoming welfare. I have no problem with those who work hard and become rich and I am working towards this myself. I have started my own business and am working on a few projects that could make me well off if they are successful. However I do have a problem with rich corporations who pay less in taxes than I do, while they send jobs overseas. Just curious but are you supporting Santorum? I know many conservatives who are. I don't have much opinion on him though I would disagree with him on gay marriage.
