It was a mistake to axe BC; it’s a gorgeous track. Rog even acknowledged that this week.

The sad thing is an "unfinished", "unpolished", "unready" Beautiful Colours was still miles ahead of nearly everything else on Astronaut. The music is great. We have a rollicking, catchy bassline. Simple but effective guitar riff. Of course being the Astronaut album, which is Duran's most overplayed keyboard album of all time, Nick is too prominent in the mix. Remix Astronaut with more guitars and less keyboard, and you have a lot more likable album. But even still, the keyboards on Beautiful Colours are not as bad as like on Want You More or the title track. I have never been a huge fan of lyrics making a song. I want a musician - not a poet or philosopher. If something is really amazing, or really bad, then lyrics can make or break a song for me. But 99% of the songs I have heard don't tend to stand out. As a result, the lyrics of Beautiful Colours don't ruin the track. At least the band weren't talking about dildos or chickens curling. So in my opinion at least - Duran Duran massively dropped the ball on this one. The entire album could have been so much better, with a better tracklisting, better mixing, better production, and more of a classic Duran sound rather than classic Maroon 5 sound. Why the band thought that Beautiful Colours was not worth finishing and putting on the album, is one of life's great mysteries. The other great mystery, of course, is why Simon Lebon would flippantly say "oh, f___ off, don't be so stupid, it's up to us what we play, and you damn well like it!'". There are some things you think, and some things you say. It amazes me that Duran Duran won't spill any new unreleased song titles to a musical interview, but will happily admit they would tell the people who have given them the extraordinary life to which they have become accustomed to "f___ off". Any Simon apologists want to stand by that comment? Let me guess - he was only joking. Or, he was telling the truth, but was just too blunt. If it were me, I'd be giving it the sheepish, apologetic "Sorry, I was taken out of context" mode of defense But then again I would never tell fans to f___ off in the first place. It sure is a great way of losing them, and they're getting rarer and rarer every year.

I couldn't agree more. Ok ish verse, followed by an unimaginative chorus, topped with a whiney, nasal and inspid chorus. I don't know what Le Bon has got against his lower register, but that's where the best resonance lies. They made the right call.

It was a mistake to axe BC; it’s a gorgeous track. Rog even acknowledged that this week. I agree. It’s certainly far far FAR better than the half baked existing songs that qualified for the album. I couldn’t believe what I was listening to when I first played Astronaut - from a band that thought it worthwhile to regroup for ‘this’? It certainly was worth the reunion had they gone for the unreleased stuff and a selection of songs of what we now know as the finished album. Still, I expect Simon was happy. Warren has gone and f#*k the quality of follow up albums. That’ll work out at 5 albums in twenty years and only one of them with any real credibility about it. Still waiting to judge the fifth. Why bother? Beautiful Colours could definitely have been the third single with a bit more work. I still enjoy it as it is though..and I’m glad the unreleased songs ‘leaked’ - reminded me of the good old days with TWA - yes I’m a dinosaur. So sue me.

First para is a winner. As for SLB apologists? Well, he has said some daft things in the past admittedly. Which haven't endeared him to the critics - I think he has mellowed with age though. Of course it’s a bit late in the day now. Mind you, didn't the Sex Pistols spit on their fans back in the day? Then again I expect their fans wanted to be spat on by Vicious. ‘A passage of rite’.

Every single non Duran fan who I played BC to loved it! They should have released it as a single!
With a great video would have been a classic!
And they liked Pretty Ones....

So yes, the early versions of BC had some daft lyrics that were clearly placeholders. “Stuff” became “blood” in later versions.
And the real lyric is “Life Isn’t standard issue it’s customized” if my ears don’t deceive me.
Finally, the live version of BC that was played in summer and autumn 2004 slaps. Andy’s guitar just added more heft and muscle that the demo lacked. The fluffy pop song of the demo became a more muscular stadium shaker in the vein of U2.
Still Hope they revisit it one day.

Yep, gotta disagree with you there, cherrylipsitck.
It's definitely my favorite track from that time period (which I guess doesn't say much). I think the melody is lovely and the musicianship is what I hoped the reunion would bring--all 5 contributing to the overall sound of the song. While I kinda agree that it's a little light weight as far as platitudes and message, I have to let Simon and the guys have it since having an optimistic anthem is something they've been hung up on since the reunion. But lyrically I kinda like it all the same. And personally, I really really like that verse: "Design, everyone's their own universe/Besides, life isn't standard issue it's customized" (yes, I believe you're right, americanscientist). particularly because I'm in the design field, so it's nice to hear him sing "Design"! If that's indeed what he's singing!
And CB, with regards to that Simon quote, I misunderstood the context when I first read your pot before reading Cherry Lipstick's article. I thought he said that in response to what songs went on the album and which ones would be cut. But it makes sense that he would say that in response to their concert song list. I'm not excusing him for being crude or ungrateful to his fans, but I have to say I understand his frustration. You really cannot please everyone. And I can see the statement being said in a half joking manner, like you would with a buddy who's busting your chops. So maybe he said it at the end of an interview when he had let his guard down and got comfortable, or maybe it was said to a reporter whom he has known for years and felt like an old friend. Regardless, I get why you would feel a bit betrayed by him saying that so flippantly, but I can also see that it's the kind of thing where "you had to be there".
