Yes, the cracks were well and truly showing during 1985 & 1986 with the side projects and the failure of the band to regroup in full. Liberty could have ended the band - it was about revitalising the band as a five piece and a new beginning. The fact that it ended up being creatively suspect and commercially weak would have ended many a band. Thankfully four of them had the stamina and desire to then pull the Wedding Album out of the bag. That may be but the side projects and Notorious contain a lot of excellent songs. Liberty does not, Serious is okay-ish as is Liberty, the rest is crap to my ears.

Very interesting and honest interview. He’s dead right that a lot of the songs just feel like jams and with John seemingly absent (getting high), Simon experiencing writer’s block and Warren and Sterling trying to find their way, it’s not surprising that the end result is so patchy BUT Liberty did lay the foundations for The Wedding Album PLUS it gave us My Antarctica which is hands down one of the best songs ANY line up of DD has ever written.
Interesting that he points to the choice of lead single and the (dreadful) album cover as early indicators that the project was going to bomb. I don’t necessarily think that Serious as the lead would have had a huge impact on the album’s commercial fortunes, but it’s an interesting “what if”...

Great SDE interview about a very, very poor album. The first sign of Duran falling apart... Liberty has several decent songs: VOS, Liberty, Serious, MA, VD, FI, CYDWI. And it's at least a really live band, unlike RCM.

This interview is gold. I like Chris, he is a very down to earth guy. I like how he only made good comments about every member of the band. I agree that releasing Violence of Summer as a single was a mistake. Serious should've gone first. I do like My Antartica. It's a lovely song but I don't feel it as a strong second single. And, while Chris and SLB has stated in separate instances that they didn't like First Impression, I disagree with them. I think it's a powerful track with great guitar and drums.
For me it should've been: 1.- Serious 2.- First Impression 3.- My Antartica

Here's a question:
Yes, the majority of us LOVE "Serious". I'd read somewhere (forget where) that the reason Nick chews bubblegum throughout the video is cos he didn't think the song should've been a single.
Any accuracy about that report? Can someone confirm/correct?

I've heard that too, that Nick didn't really care for the song. But I have no idea where I heard it. It could have been from some other random poster here simply saying it without evidence for all I know.
It would be nice to know if it's true or not.

If Nick didn't like a song it's unlikely it would have made the album.

Chris Kimsey: I don’t think there was any interference. It was more management; the record company were just happy they were making an album [laughs]. That’s my memory of it. The only point was that it was getting slower because Nick wanted more time to experiment, but as I said, he should have been doing that somewhere else.
SDE: So Nick went off to a different studio and…
Chris Kimsey: … And then he brings it all back, and we put it back in, yeah. He had a partner called John Jones and they were almost tied at the hip, but on this album there wasn’t the time, so Nick was having to compromise. I didn’t want to say, ‘sorry mate, you’ve only got 10 minutes’ so that’s why I suggested he went to the cheaper studio. And Nick called me up and said, ‘Mr. K, I love you, but the studio has brown carpet’. He hates brown. He hates anything beige or brown. I said, ‘well, maybe you’ll get it done quicker then!’ [laughs]. Love him to bits.
Is Nick retarded? Ass-burgers?

Why even say something like ‘he had a partner (what?) and they were almost tied to the hip’? Such a bizarre thing to say. Why is it that album producers tend to lose the plot over time? I blame the hash browns and coke.

I was listening to the Liberty Demo recently...VOS sounded more organic. John and Warren sang on “Can You Deal With It?” We could hear John’s bass clearer on the demos...
