Just as a comparison, what albums do board members like sound wise? Big Thing and The Wedding Album came to mind immediately.

Just as a comparison, what albums do board members like sound wise? Frankly, I think their best sounding album is 'So Red The Rose' I have some tools to make digital music sound whatever I like. The only thing I can't remedy is over-compression. So all their albums with the DR over 10 are fine for me (1981-1993). Each of them has its own sound character, but that's a good thing.

Compression, as the name suggests, squashes the dynamics and does not let the sound “breathe”. I know it sounds wanky but if you listen to Decade and compare it with Greatest, you will see what I mean. Greatest is quite compressed and I’m glad I did not get rid of my copy of Decade as its sonically superior. The same goes for the 1993 remaster of the debut compared with later remasters. The more recent ones are diabolical. Vinyl tends to have a higher dynamic range and these are the way to go if you value the dynamics. I have a 1999 remaster of Hunky Dory as well as the most recent vinyl remaster and it’s like night and day. FP is a great album. I think it’s one of their best, despite the Moroder track Tonite Unite and Anniversary, but the dynamics are not great at all. The same goes for Paper Gods. If I’m tired, I cannot listen to these albums at all. By the way, it’s not the mix, don’t get confused. mastering and mixing are very different things.

What DR score does All You Need Is Now have? Do the band members themselves have a say? Can imagine they must be mortified te hear the difference in the studio compared to the final product.

I've often wondered how the band would react when playing, for example, Big Thing then listening to Future Past back to back on a modest hifi that most people use, plus earphones/headphones which have never been more popular. I'd love to think they'll get to hear about how fans feel about this...because surely they can't be happy with shoddy sound. They often talk about their legacy. Well, this is one part that's not doing them any favours.

Just as a comparison, what albums do board members like sound wise? For me, 7ATRT is a perfect production (although it's not one of my favorite albums in terms of songs). The second one is "Rio", the third one is "Liberty". (I mean editions from the 20th century, ofc.)

Does anyone have any experience of playing FP on cassette? I wondered/hoped the mastering would be different the same way vinyl sometimes is. Although, it's likely just a "digital dump" and duped onto bog standard tape I imagine. Almost every expense was spared with the packaging. And the bright green, whilst fun, cheapened it IMO. So not holding my breath!

I've just acquired a needle-drop of FP. Unfortunately it is the incomplete white vinyl version. Still it is possible to evaluate the sound quality and make a comparison with the CD version.
CD LP 01-Invisible DR5 DR11 02-All Of You DR5 DR11 03-Give It All Up DR4 DR11 04-Anniversary DR5 DR11 05-Future Past DR5 DR10 06-Velvet Newton DR4 07-Beautiful Lies DR4 DR10 08-Tonight United DR5 DR10 09-Wing DR4 DR10 10-Nothing Less DR5 11-Laughing Boy DR5 12-Hammerhead DR5 13-Invocation DR3 14-More Joy! DR5 DR10 15-Falling DR4 DR10
I wouldn't say that the sound is great, but it is (much) better than the CD/download version according to my subjective perception; and the technical data confirms it. I'm not sure why the shops like HDtracks can't sell this master version as a download. It doesn't requier any additional costs to do it (additional 1 GB storage space?); just an option for a customer to choose while making a purchase.
