Funny, those 2 are among my favourites from that time period! I especially like Warren & Nick's playing and overall groove on those songs, and I find the vocals & lyrical approach fit particularly well with the music. Sin Of The City is another one that nails it for me Very interesting that most people either love or hate those songs, but no one seems to be in the middle! Very true, they are polarising pieces of music! And count me in for loving Sin Of The City as well. I mean besides the craptacular beginning and end (I know a lot of you like that it sets the song up and tries to place you there, but to me it's just something to skip before you hear some awesome Duran Duran music), the actual song itself is funky and really catchy, with a great guitar riff during the middle eight. Not to mention the Bass God doing his thing; it probably is the only song where JT's playing reminds me a little of Flea from the Chilli Peppers, and I love it to bits. I personally listen to an edited version I did using Audacity which gets rid of the extended beginning and ending and sounds a lot better. It goes for 5.18, and saves me reaching for that awful fast-forward button

I still maintain that Hothead and Downtown are the worst songs in the DD catalog (at least among album tracks, anyway). Well hey, to each their own! For me, most of the problem I had with the tracks were lyrically/vocally. But while there's some polarization when it comes to songs from the Liberty era, I don't think there's any doubt that the type of sound that developed then worked itself out for some songs from TWA. Sin of the City, like you pointed out, is a great example of that.

The worst Duran song of all time was & is First Impression. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Seriously? You prefer 'Venice Drowning' over 'First Impression'? I realise that peeps have their tastes but there are some seriously duff duran songs that I couldn't imagine anyone liking..('Venice Drowning' is one of them) but..hey, each to their own!! Lol 'First Impression' is one of the strong contenders on 'Liberty'..it's just a shame side two went downhill from there! Plus everything that Coolbarn said..its Friday evening and I can't be arsed to write a book! I rather like Venice Drowning and Downtown, thank you. We all like different things.

Coolbarn..I'm getting tired of liking your posts! Can you write something that I can disagree with and have a real discussion?..with all due respect to you of course I am awesome with a massive manhood. And THIS claim made after discussion of the Rock Rod! Wow. Takes some serious confidence for that one.

OK, I just read all of this. Wow. A lot to read. From what I recall, John's life was falling apart. If NOT for that, the little things going on in the band might have otherwise been dealt with differently, but I think the personal side of things IN ADDITION to the professional issues were why John had to walk away to get his life straight. I once went through a deep depression and needed to go to stay wit my dad for 2 weeks to just get away from the day to day drudgery that was my life for a new perspective. It allowed me to make some choices and changes that got my head on right. Later that year I started taking classes in college and then I met my hubby on a bus and began dating him. Had I not gotten myself sorted out, I might not be with him now and we just celebrated our 26th anniversary this month. John had to back away from EVERYTHING familiar. I am so glad he got sober and somehow dodged the bullet of overdose so many have succumbed to.
As for Warren, I could give a rat's ass what he does and am not in any way offended. In fact if they were not so expensive, I would add a Rock Rod to my collection and try to get it signed some day. I am still looking for an affordable copy of that G Magazine. However, I can see why that caused friction in the band, lol. I appreciate the way Warren helped rework the songs live to make them fresh again. 1987 was a great tour and part of it was the way the songs did not sound like they had every time they'd been played before. Warren was also responsible for that AMAZING live version of Secret Oktober live in the late 90s and early 2000s.
As for Simon, I know he was getting rather annoyed by the level of attention the Zebra girls were giving Warren @ the shows. I love Simon, but his ego is fragile. But more importantly, he loves John deeply. Make of that statement what you will, but I am saying that Simon's spiral began the moment John left and got worse every passing day. His writer's block began and got worse. He said in an interview once that he WAS depressed to the point of thinking of walking away and Yasmin was the one who convinced him to get the original lineup together. GOD BLESS THAT WOMAN!!!!! I always loved her. Anyway, look @ the level of happiness and energy Simon had following the reunion. He was a new man.
I can say that following Andy's SECOND departure, the band had a few things to say about legal proceedings and frankly, I think most of them get along better with Warren @ this point. As for musicianship, Warren is the man!! Andy is fine, but he is the one who could not play OW and CU properly.
Nick IS the driving force, but sometimes he gets in his own way. He needs to let some things stay a bit more raw and not produce every little sound until HE thinks it is perfect. Hopefully Mark and Nile will have made a difference this time.
I do hope this time around they let Dom a bit looser to be creative and maybe be heard more in the mix. Look @ the different level of sound and style in a song like Tricked Out on the album vs live. Live it BLEW UP. It was SO good. On album, it falls a bit flat. I hope they allowed some of his live energy to show through.
Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts from the previous discussion and on the topics so far.

Agree about Sin of the City (I also FF to the beginning of the actual song and stop it when the music stops), and I do like Downtown as well. Love the drums on Downtown!
I still don't like Hothead, but I really like All Along the Water and pick it out as one of my favorite tracks on the album, along with VOS, Liberty, and Serious. I love the energy and the bass and guitar riff that drives AATW, and the strong, flourish-y drums. The rest of the songs I'm kinda meh about. I don't particularly hate any of them, but I do dislike Hothead and maybe Read My Lips and Venice Drowning. I'm going to listen to the whole thing today (it's been a while since I've done that) and see how I feel about the rest of the songs.
BTW, great post, MNT!

I rather like Venice Drowning and Downtown, thank you. We all like different things. 'Thankyou'? Is there a pun intended there? Like I said..'Each to their own'. Still think it's fodder for the cows. "Mooo..."I'll never understand the hatred for "Venice Drowning" I love it, exotic and sexy, sounds like something from Arcadia. "Downtown" is pure Cow-Dung though, blurgh!

One way to appreciate Downtown is to listen to it right after All She Wants Is...

This thread has gone off topic and has now become a discussion on the merits of Liberty.
Besides the thread was created on the premise that "it is known" that John left because of Warren when in fact there are no sources to back the allegation up and John has never claimed he left because of this.

That is because a new Duran Duran album has been announced, so we all don't know what the hell is going on, completely mental! See what they do to us, we are all loonies!
