It's kinda strange the band isn't as daring putting up a tour setlist, given the fact that they've just released an album they knew many fans wouldn't like. Why not be as confident by stirring up the setlist? It's not as if the ticket sales would be as vulnerable to a daring setlist as record sales to music people don't approve of. Whilst I would love to hear deeper cuts, I think Duran feel the need to play to as broad of an audience as they can. The majority from night to night, I imagine, are seeing them for the first time and will probably never see them again. With 4-5 songs from the new album in the set, it's already a lot of music that the casual fan won't know — not everyone in attendance has, or will purchase, the new record. Throw in deep cuts from an obscure album in the 90s and it adds up. Of course, some will chose to delve deeper and, perhaps, become a tad obsessive like many of us here. I suspect the lower answer explains a bit why they won't change things up extremely. If you go to a show that's not advertised as them playing 'such and such', then you risk losing the audience at times if they play too much of a new thing or something obscure. As a performer, I imagine a lot of your performance is inspired by seeing the happy faces or people singing along. It can't be too fun seeing blank stares or huge bathroom breaks a lot of the time. Heck, I'm what you'd probably call a hardcore fan, and I'm positive that I don't know every single lyric of the band's. If they pull out an album track off a random album, I might be one of those blank stares as well! I wish they would do what U2 is doing right now: change out 2-3 songs every night. Most of the set list stays the same, but there are a few slots that rotate between a few different choices. That way there is at least some variety. For example, rotate White Lines with Careless Memories, Hold Back the Rain, and Union of the Snake. Or rotate Leopard with Chauffeur, Seventh Stranger, and Nightboat. The funny thing about that is that you still have fans on the U2 boards who say how horrible it is that they only change 2-3 songs a night!

I get annoyed that the whole period between TWA and whatever new album they are promoting gets ignored except for White Lines and Sunrise. There's no need for White Lines when they have a huge number of their own compositions that they can choose from. I'd love to hear songs like Playing With Uranium, Electric Barbarella, What Happens Tomorrow, The Valley, Leopard etc. Going by the set lists since Paper Gods was released, nothing from All You Need Is Now will survive on the Paper Gods tour despite it being a very positively received album in their fan base. And that's a shame. And the set list should be three or four tracks longer to help accommodate their extensive back catalogue. I suspect that White Lines is kept in just for the energy level and being one that comes across well live, even though it's a cover. Same reason for Sunrise being kept in the set list. AYNIN songs, I suspect, will move aside in order to accommodate the Paper Gods tracks. If they start stacking up songs from those two albums with the amount they play, then there's not going to be much room for anything else. Maybe the reason they don't play 20+ songs anymore is for personal factors? Sure, some act still go over 20 regularly in their 50s and 60s, but who knows if Simon's voice can take it any more on a regular basis (among other things). Sort of related to those topics... I saw the Foo Fighters a few times over this past month, and their set list was basically the same each time except for 2-3 songs and the order in which they played them. They play over 20 songs each night, and a lot of the fan criticisms are similar to the ones you'd hear on here (too many singles, not enough obscure stuff, etc.). But a few of the criticisms that they got on this particular tour are that they're only playing 3 songs off of their most recent album (which seems kind of low, even for them) and how they're playing a lot of covers, rather than some of their original material. An article for one of these shows even pointed this out and said how they actually played more Van Halen songs than songs from one of their most popular albums, and how their second-to-last release got more songs played than their most recent one. This was the quote that stood out the most to me and made me laugh out loud... When Grohl announced earlier in the night, “We’ve been a band for 20 f***ing years. I think we should play a song from each record,” it wasn’t yet apparent that he meant each record from the David Lee Roth era.So yeah... why some artists make the decisions they do, who knows? But I figured out a long time ago that there's no possible way they can please everyone!

Does anyone remember the Up Close Tour in early 2001? I saw them three straight nights during that tour (2 in NYC, 1 in CT) and the setlist changed by at least 6 songs each night. It was amazing. That lineup was obviously drawing heavily from Pop Trash, Medazzaland and the hits, although the "hits" included some of the lesser successful singles like Skin Trade and All She Wants Is. All in all, a great run of shows. Odd to me that the LeBon/Rhodes/WC/Travers/Whemiller (sp?) lineup could shake things up more than LeBon/Rhodes/Taylor/Taylor.

Difficult now to imagine, but loved that DD had the balls to open the Close Up show I saw with 'Siva Halo!' It was great!

The band have said they will continue to play the hits- so don't hold your breath on that unless they do rehearsal gigs ala 2011- which were amazing
I'm disappointed that Leopard has seemingly gone and they play Danceaphobia instead- why not play nothing for 5 mins- total silence would be better than that crap of a song
I see the same complaints at other forums

Something had to give, so an album track off the previous album is the obvious casualty. For me though, it's White Lines that needs to go. I hated it from the first moment I heard it at the NEC in Jan 1994 - and they didn't even write it! I suspect it stays in because it is popular live. It's also useful for going to the bar! :-)

Rather have then do the whole PG + Rio album instead.
Let's face it, Duran Duran won't be around for very long anymore, they better make the best of it for their fans, since not many non-fans will show up anyway.
