It was the 90s, so I understand why Capitol mandated a full album in order to make more money.
But the right move was for DD to have dropped a covers EP in late 94 and returned to the studio for an full album with John that could have been out by 1996.
The chilly reception to Thank You and the huge lag time between albums of original material did kill the momentum of the Wedding Album.
Perfect covers EP (from what we knew they had kicked around): White Lines Rebel Rebel Success Jeepster Lay Lady Lay Needle and the Damage Done Perfect Day

I would have chosen different EP choices, and different songs to cover*. But we cant go back in time and change things, and at least we got all of those songs to debate over. Its a hot topic we've had lots of mileage from. Warren does some amazing work, and the songs are much improved over the demo versions.
But the album is not the worst of all time, and not even the worst Duran album. There doesnt seem to be a link to the article, so without reading it I cant comment further.
*edit: Gold and True! ha-ha.

I’ve made my own version of Thank You and granted I pulled in some songs that they recorded later so it’s really just a covers album but I almost feel like it’s what Thank You should have been in 1995. White Lines Instant Karma Boys Keep Swinging Perfect Day Watching the Detectives Lay Lady Lay Crystal Ship Needle and the Damage Done Thank You Drive By And that is a damn fine covers album and pretty representative of their core influences (although they should have definitely covered Roxy Music or Pink Floyd- Warren could have slayed some Floyd). I purposely leave off Fame because from a production perspective it just sounds so different from their later work and screws up my flow. m.soundcloud.com/bittersweetmachines/fire-in-the-city
