you should try to listen 'white lines' (wrapless mix). It's the one sung like they play it live, without furios 5 & the masterflash.

In actuality, this album should have been fifty-percent Bowie covers, the other fifty-percent Roxy Music covers. What bullshit with this *ode to heroes* crap - okay, I know Simon liked Jim Morrison and I think his punk band Dog Days or whatever covered some Doors... but Ball of Confusion...? Led Zeppelin? Sly & The Family Stone? what the hell??? Even JT couldn't stomach the bullshit anymore... I like to think this debacle helped contribute to his decision to finally get cleaned up. Let's HOPE. here is an infinitely better cover of Ball of Confusion by Love & Rockets from '85... link: Ball of Confusion covered by Love & Rockets

But I have to admit, I enjoy White Lines, Perfect Day, and Watching the Detectives. The d**ned "Drive By" managed to anticipate the stringy Owen Pallet arrangements on AYNIN "orchestral" tracks Beyond the Rain etc - NIck just never lets go, right? and kind of continues the tradition instilled by "Yo Bad Azizi" wherein they kind of sound-check themselves, but I get it, Nick Rhodes is a film guy and he likes French New Wave and part of that schtick a la Jean Luc Goddard is to quote from yourself, well I guess Warhol did it too... At least you get the Lou Reed connection - Velvet Underground, so Warhol, so... The production by Anthony J. Resta is pretty damned good for stuff recorded on tour around the world in hotel rooms...? Aha, recording in living rooms they managed to pull off in '93 and here, too bad they lost their touch when it came to Medazzaland and Pop Trash.

Interestingly enough Roger has been influenced by John Bonham & Andy T by Jimmy Page, both have stated this.
Yet Interestingly enough neither Roger or Andy was in DD at the time of the TY LP (even tho RT offered a little effort to the TY project)
Obviously WC was an avid LZ fan & we all know SLB loves poetry
I love DDs version of thank you (the song) and it's epic ethereal ending
Re Sly & family stone, it's obvious DD would be into a groove such as them, it was like a heavy disco sound like before disco actually happened. If DD were into TRex, well this American version Sly etc had some soul thrown in too. I get why DD covered it.
As for DD entwined with rap, DD "HAVE" been influenced by rap yet when DD were forming, rap was a new entity. Thanks to Blondie's rapture (first white group to feature it) and grand master flash which were kinda raps first seeds sown.
When I hear people say DD weren't influenced by this or that I feel they don't get who DD are. Yes DDs influences in the 70s may have been reflective of DD in the early 80s yet in the late 80s things had changed. Should DD be only influenced by the 70s and don their new romantic attire in the late 80s What about in the 90s, should DD still only be influenced by the 70s and still don their new romantic attire? What about 00s & 10s??? Still influenced only by the70s music styles and still wear their New Romantic clothing but in larger sizing?
It's like DD should have stopped being influenced by any new artist/genre after their first 3 releases. Come on guy's that in itself is a ridiculous statement considering DD embrace the new and fresh and IMO attempt to grab the future of music (whatever that is with every LP).
Well this may be a shock to some but guess what? DD have been around for sometime and it's unlikely that they are NOT influenced by the musical styles/cultures and musical trends since their first three LPs
Off course they have been influenced by more than glam rock, punk and disco, it's what only keeps them going but IMO makes them interesting.
If anyone thinks DD are not into nor influenced by rap (amongst other genres) they need to take another listen to tracks like liberty's hot head (pre TY LP) & sin of the city (pre TY LP) & what about bedroom toys?
No one IMO can say then that DD are not influenced by rap because if one does feel this then we (them & I) understand DD radically differently.
To actually say I don't like rap and because rap doesn't sound like the first 3 DD LPs that's why I don't like DD doing it, is another discussion which doesn't suit DDs art as a whole. I say this considering then that one is therefore wanting DD to sound like the first 3 years (3LPs) of their career and actually dismiss the fact that DD LP releases have been evident throughout another 36 years.
I guess it's ok that some feel this it's a personal taste thing.
Warren once said, DD have no "stylistic boundary" and that's exactly what makes DD fresh, interesting, intriguing while always modern.
Having said all that I do see a radical difference between the first 3 LPs and sometimes I feel I am the only one (or one of the very few) on this board who does.
Eg How different is PE to HLTW to UOTS & a year later to WBs ?
Like one could ask themselves, was that the same band releasing those tracks within a short 4 year period?

Fully clear, it shows WC's American influence on my once-favourite British band at the time. And not in a good 'Fleetwood Mac'-ish way. These bands have NOTHING to do with DD's New Romantics lecacy. And then they were criticizing Andy for being 'more Thin Lizzy than Roxy Music'...

Umm
I understand that DD wanted to blend the sound of the sex pistols with CHIC
The sex pistols are from the UK & CHIC from the USA
That's 50 50 in my book

Umm I understand that DD wanted to blend the sound of the sex pistols with CHIC The sex pistols are from the UK & CHIC from the USA That's 50 50 in my book It is obvious that Duran Duran had lots of musical influences - to say it is 50-50 English/US based on one quote from John Taylor is hilarious. I would argue that most fans would agree that Duran Duran were influenced more by British music rather than American music, regardless of that interesting JT quote. So I can see where Oakey is coming from. Check out books.google.com.au/books?id=R857BwAAQBAJ&pg=PA70#v=onepage&q&f=false and books.google.com.au/books?id=SyDJCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA157&lpg=PA157#v=onepage&q&f=false where they also agree. Sure Duran loved American stuff as well - no musician worth their salt would ONLY listen to one style of music from one location, as they would never develop as an artist. But the majority of the acts who's concerts Nick and John attended, and who they name-dropped before Warren joined the band, were British. I would have loved to have heard Duran do both a Chic and Sex Pistols cover to include on Thank You. It's funny that such influential bands didn't get a run!
