I think Paper Gods is a very solid album. I really enjoyed it. It was a nice follow up to All You Need is Now. Both albums were really solid. Therefore, I am optimistic about the new album! They are still fully creative, maybe they look at the music charts too much

It always surprises me when Duran Duran make unusual comments about their music. Artists treat their works a bit differently. If something doesn't go their way, then they don't like it, even if it's been successful. Woody Allen hates "Manhattan", although it is one of his best movies (among fans and critics). Phil Oakey didn't like "Don't You Want Me", and so on. I suppose the self-critique raises the bar for them.

Also found PG highly enjoyable and their approach of releasing more songs than just the core album (bonus tracks etc) is something I like. It is also clear that while PG gets mixed appreciation here, most forum members do like several songs. But which songs they like differs greatly, there is absolutely no consensus, so in a way their approach works (release a lot of songs). Many find YCMWS for instance great but that is a song I really cannot listen to. And I do not rank PG among their journey songs, it’s boring as hell. But I do like LNITC and Danceaphobia.

For me, the problem is there are only five truly great songs on the album. And sadly, out of those five, the only two that don't need any work are What Are The Chances? and Butterfly Girl. Both of those songs are fantastic as is.
The three other decent tracks are Pressure Off, but they ruin it with fake crowd noise and too soft guitar, Face For Today is let down terribly by its drum sounds (if ever Roger phoned in his drum contribution - that was it), and The Universe Alone, after an amazing first four and a half minutes, has deplorable distortion and chanting that actually makes my ears bleed.
I barely even remember nor acknowledge the other tracks; most of them are either too long, or too underwhelming.
The bonus tracks are really cool though, with the majority of them being VASTLY superior to the filler that compiled the album proper.
For years Skin Trade was the Duran Duran member's most over-rated track, but it's safe to say that Paper Gods is the band's most over-rated album to date.

Count me as one of the few and the proud who actually like Paper Gods. if I had to rank or tier the songs: Love: Title track, Face for Today, Only in Dreams, Sunset Garage, Universe alone, YKMWS, all the B-sides except Cinderella Ride Like: Cinderella Ride, Change the Skyline, Pressure Off, Last Night in the City Indifferent: What are the Chances, Butterfly Girl, Danceophobia Dislike: I can't think of any song that I truly skip or dislike on this album, on a regular basis. Certainly, when I am making playlists for the gym or for the car, I would include the ones in the top 2 tiers more often, but...in general, I think it's a strong album. And yeah...I like the 90's era too, as my username attests...I guess I am one messed up Duranie!

The Universe Alone is a skip song because of the distortion at the end which is awful indeed. Not a bad song. But the whole of PG the album suffers from the heavy compression and brickwalling that is ruining so much great music nowadays (Suede, Ladytron, are you listening?)

Totally agree on Univers Alone. I just listened to it, as I wanted to remember what, exactly, I disliked about it. Yes, that weird distortion at the end is so unpleasant I would like to skip the rest. However, I actually do like the choir singing, at the end, so I tend to tough it out.
Interestingly, I have found myself listening to the album more. There was a thread, here, about favorite post 90s tracks. I ended up making a playlist with the tracks I listed, then removed the Pop Trash songs as they just didn't fit the list. But I found myself listening to the Paper Gods tracks on that list on repeat, so I've gone back to the album for a revisit.
My feelings on some of the songs haven't changed. But some have become more appealing.
If their new album has a similar edm style to this one, I hope it's not so compressed. The overall sound gives me a headache and becomes a blended wall of mess, if I try to listen to it repeatedly. They could stand to have more definition in their sounds, even if said sounds all come from Nick's machines. Other producers can manage this, so it's doable. Perhaps they've got producers involved who will do a better job in this area.

“We will see how it grows over the coming years...” WTF?? Watch them never play any of it again live, ever 🤣🤣 Holy Beads of Jism... you said it - Master Rhodes has gone off the Deep End. He's stuck in a timewarp. Think about it. Nothing new creatively that's been released by Duran Duran in five f*cking years... WTF???
