Agree with most points here (lack of cohesion, some duds, too much tinkering) but I stand by the fact that had Paper Gods been released with the following tracklist, we would hold it in much higher regard: While I completely agree with the sentiment, that yes, Paper Gods sucked when it came to track selection by the band, the problem with the album is that you could get 100 different setlists from 100 different fans. Compare Paper Gods to its predecessor. Sure the band butchered the CD version of AYNIN by incorporating ridiculous instrumentals of the underwhelming title track throughout it (another example of them trying to be too clever and arty), but overall the best songs made it on to the album. The songs left off the record were generally terrible. I would think that 95% of fans would agree that the strongest songs made the album, and that to me spells a successful record, by a band on top of their game and knowing their sound. In fact AYNIN is the only record since the reunion where the band got it right. Astronaut was full of filler, with plenty of superior "unpolished" demos sitting around twiddling their little musical thumbs. RCM left off Cry Baby Cry, easily one of Duran's best songs of that time. And I don't know how Duran Duran organised Paper Gods - I would suggest by either throwing a dart at a PG track dartboard, or pulling song titles from one of Mr Hudson's hats.

I agree with almost everything in this post. DD have struggled post-reunion with choosing the best album tracks and have always struggled with choosing the best singles. However, there is a very strong, cohesive 10-12 track album buried in the 18 songs from the Paper Gods era, which is I why tend to hold it in higher regard. Cry Baby Cry should not only have been on RCM, but should have been a single. The 9 track digital teaser of AYNIN was surperior to the expanded release, save for TBYSB. And we don't need to re-litigate what happened with Astronaut. It would be amazing if DD solicited insight from fans regaridng the final tracklist of DD15. Any band that includes Danceophobia over Cinderella Ride on an album can't be trusted.

Perhaps the blurb for DD40 should be "Duran Duran, unable to be trusted for 40 years"

Yes, if you mute the volume, then those three seconds are relatively pleasant.
Unfortunately the remaining 250 seconds are horrid.
Also unfortunately, the days of three seconds of "hot girl dancers" and dancing cats making a music video bearable are long gone. I think I lost brain cells watching that video, and then trying to justify how a music video cannot save crappy music.
Thankfully I have plenty to spare.
(Brain cells that is - not music videos with crappy music)
