True, but it would be better to have the physical release or the extra tracks by tuesday, so you don't have to buy the album twice, that's what I meant. Of course that's the ideal. But it's not ready yet so I'm happy they've let us buy what 70% ? of the new album early for us to enjoy. Yeah I know, as I said, It is still a great idea to listen 70% of the album by tuesday. I'm just saying I don't have money to buy two releases. Itunes music store is not even available in my country, so I don't even have the possibility to buy it digitally. Anyway, is not that I haven't heard the 9 tracks already (which are great). I'll still buy the CD in feb.

I'm only going to one because I have a life. You probably didn't intend to sound like a contemptuous ass here, but that's how you came off. Especially when you say this a little while later: Well, there you go making accusations. How do you know what people's situations are? I intend to see multiple shows, and I can assure you I "have a life", whatever that means. Indeed, the life I have enables me both finacially and time-wise to do just that. As for the poll, I picked the 'I think it's whatever. I'll get the album in Feb.' option, but only because it was the pick closest to my real position: I have no opinion on the wisdom of their release strategy, but I'll be buying both the download and the physical release.

And good point was made today. I think it would make a lot of sense if buying the album on iTunes got you a discount for the CD release. Why pay twice for songs you already have? It's not like this is two hard copies. It's a digital copy. One harddrive fail and you've lost it. I can actually say something in iTunes' defence here. I do know of one person who had a hard-drive crash and lost all his downloads. But he kept the receipts (whatever iTunes sends as proof of payment) and informed iTunes of what happened, and he was allowed to download them again for free. I'm not sure if this is standard, or considered on a per-case basis, but it was nice of them to let him get them back.

Going back to the original topic (sort of). I can understand why the album is being released in different formats. Just as the CD replaced the cassette tape, digital is replacing the CD. It's a faster way for the band to release it, faster for the consumer to purchase it, and the quality is decent enough for the average listener. But of course it lacks the "hold in your hand" quality, liner notes, booklet, and in this particular case the extra music that will be available on the CD and/or vinyl. Whether one format is better than the other or not is completely up to the individual.
What bothers me though, is this notion that all the fans ought to buy multiple copies of the album in every possible format. Sure that would add up sales for DD, but some of us just don't have that kind of financial luxury. I also don't think that that is why the band did it that way. The different formats are out there to give us a choice. If someone doesn't like it in one format, they can buy it in another. In the end, if a fan buys one copy in one version, they've done their part. That fan should not be made to feel bad about not having the zillion copies/downloads another fan might buy.
At any rate, this may or may not coincide with Spacebird's original post, but it is the point I've been trying to make.

Do you think that fans are putting pressure on other fans to buy multiple copies?
I agree with you that buying one copy is sufficient but, if you are like me, you might buy more.

Some seriously pompous opinions being aired on here - I think it's better I don't quote on people as not to antagonise further.
This thread has become about the 'haves' and 'have nots' and anyone who is 'caught' saying that buying 2 releases in a very short space of time is branded either:
1) a cheapskate, 2) a pirate, or 3) not a fan of the band (amongst other things)
If you CAN afford the luxury of buying everything and everything that Duran Duran release, including the luxurious christmas bauble set, then fine good for you, but just consider other people can't and that doesn't make them, erm, NONE OF THE ABOVE!

it's up to the individual to decide how many formats they want to buy of the album-
what they're doing is really no different from others do- buy the i-tunes version early is the equivalent of getting extra tracks if you buy the i-tunes version instead of the cd or the Amazon version or whatever- they released an extra track with the i-tunes version of RCM and I don't recall any complaints about that
it's all marketing ploy- that most artists do- release multiple versions of the same product- there are 3 versions of the latest Take That album, there were at least 4 or 5 versions of the most recent U2 album. Depeche Mode had 4 different versions of their last album, and have used the same tactic for the tour dvd/cd release. and as usual Lady Gaga took it one step further by putting different tracks on different versions of the TFM- I'm, not saying I agree with it- but that's the way it seems to be nowadays
in the case of AYNIN - I will get it on i-tunes tomorrow, and because I'm a bit of a Duran-geek I'll end up with whatever cd formats appear in Feb- but that's my choice- I certainly wouldn't pressure anyone into doing the same if they couldn't afford it- I've been in that position where buying a cd is a major expense- so Sparebird I know where you're coming from

I see one ship that does not belong in that collection. A Viper Mark II. pretty cool pictures. Thanks, but you missed the Klingon Bird of Prey and the Cylon Raider to the left of the Viper! Anyway, apologies to everyone for having temporarily sidetracked the thread back on page 3 so I could run on about Star Wars crap. Glad to see it moved forward quickly (and prodigiously). I'd say overall that it's been a good read, and despite some pointed words, overall people have done a good job of keeping emotions in check and sticking to the debate (except of course Randal who took his ball and went home in a huff, which was a shame because he was actually being pretty level headed and non antagonistic for awhile there). In any event, I had checked the box for 'the release strategy sucks' off the top of my head back when the thread started, but I think at this point I'd go with "I think it's whatever. I'll get the CD in February." I also have to say that it's cool as hell that John basically said he understood and was OK with people getting a hold of the download "unofficially" if they don't have Itunes.
