I like it, it's catchy and fun, and hopefully Simon can put up an awesome vocal melody to go along with it. Still am waiting for John to come alive on these snippets though. None of the basslines from the bits we've heard so far have been as interesting or great as from Duran Duran or Rio. I really want JT to wow me this time around. Roger's drums are sounding powerful and real, so I want both components of the rhythm section at their best. Here's hoping

After Notorious John's bass playing became boring really - he lost all of his funk. Even the classic Sin Of The City bass line was written by Warren and Nick. However, I do think he's getting back to that style of playing from what I've heard

I agree with coolbarn and gabby. when I first listened to the snippet I thought "and where's the bass?" anyway, I like it. can't wait for more.

I don't really agree. You can really hear the bass on that intro. To be honest I would be more worried about the voice ...We'll see

For me, Simon's vocals have been pretty great over the years. As much as I dislike most of RCM, Simon sounds great, despite some pretty awful lyrics. Btw - not that you need me to say this, but your opinion is obviously completely valid....just making conversation. Is it the recent stuff (Astro/RCM) where the vocals haven't been to your liking, or is it just the snippets themselves (I know on that one snippet, there's some repeating going on that a lot of folks talked about....I can't even remember the part.....it both annoyed me and yet I kinda found myself liking it in an odd way). So far, the bass on the new stuff has sounded a bit synthy. What I do really like and that is standing out to me on the new stuff is I can hear Roger for the first time in a long time. That's a welcome change. On RCM, Roger might as well have not been there. The programmed beats were boring heard-this-crap-before fare. The drum sound on the new stuff sounds like early 80s Duran, but still sounds fresh and less predictable. I'm saying that without really studying the snippets (and I haven't listened to them but a few times), but just in the times I've listened to them, the drum and guitar is what stands out. The bass, as others have noted, seems missing/snythy.....and for me, there's a bit too much synth going on at times.....but that was true of 7RT and I still like the album.

New guy here.
I'm one person who definitely missed Roger's input all the years he was gone. It's obvious to me what he brings to the songs. I love his little fillers and interesting beats. And you're right--he's practically gone again in RCM. John's bass playing seems to be a little hit-or-miss lately, at least in the final mixes. Sometimes you hear some inspired bass lines, sometimes they're way too subtle. But I think John would attribute that to what the song called for. I think his bass line on Instant Karma is fantastic and I wish he would add that kind of groove and drive into every song! As for the synths, all the snippets have been sounding a little over-processed. In the first 2 albums the synths were ever-present but never overpowering. I always felt the sound was very balanced with all 5 elements. 7RT is a little synth-y, but still not as much as the last few Duran albums. And there's a lot more heavy guitar in that album than one might think.
And Simon's singing has definitely changed since the first 3 albums. He used to sing in that low, Bowie/Ferry voice which I really really miss. It gave the songs a more sophisticated classy sound. Nowadays he sounds a little too high and nasal-y. For instance, I think "What Happens Tomorrow" would have sounded even better if Simon had sung it a few octaves lower.

Did Nick and Warren write the bass-line for Sin of the City? I always thought that song was fundamentally written by JT, lyrics and all?

Saint, I too was under the impression that John had written that song by himself.

Definately not, Warren has said that he and Nick wrote the song. With Nick coming up with the wierd chords in the chorus and Warren coming up with the bass part and all guitars.
John then came and wrote the lyrics or already had the lyrics and fitted the words to the music. I suppose Simon progressed the melody to its final stage
