I don't get this "channeling his inner andy taylor" stuff. I've seen it on a few posts. Talking as if Andy Taylor somehow came up with this unique new style of guitar that no one else had ever played before. Dom is just a good guitarist and some fans around here refuse to give him any credit saying "oh, he's just trying sound like Andy" instead of saying "oh, he sounds really good, I enjoy his guitar parts". It just so happens that it seems Dom has a lot of the same influences and plays with a blues/funk/rock style. He's not trying to be anyone besides Dom Brown who just happens to be a damn good guitarist. I just don't get why the fanbase seems so against giving him any credit without invoking the name of former DD guitarists.
Just because I said he's "channelling his inner Andy Taylor" doesn't mean I don't like him and am not giving him credit. I merely used that phrase for some artistic flair in my posts. I should have known there is somebody here so gormless and biased that he'd infer I was suggesting that Andy Taylor came up with this unique style of guitar playing that nobody else had before.
Alright I'll spell it out for you Randall and anybody else here who has an IQ of below room temperature. Actually that's nobody, EVERYBODY else here is intelligent and very good to discuss things with. So I'll just spell it out for you Randall, some special treatment for our special friend.
IN THE SNIPPETS WE'VE HEARD SO FAR DOM BROWN'S GUITARING SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO ANDY'S FROM THE FIRST TWO ALBUMS.
Now I'm not saying Andy is some guitar hero who revolutionised the instrument, playing stuff nobody had heard before and will never hear again. And I'm not saying Dom is a crap guitarist who can only copy off others. I'm just saying that it appears Dom has really listened to Andy's playing from Duran Duran and Rio and has been inspired by it.
I really like Dom and what he brings to Duran. If you bothered to read my other posts you will notice I have said that the drums and lead guitar have been the best parts of the snippets so far. But you listen to the stuff Ronson has leaked online, to the clips released on Youtube, and try and tell me that he doesn't sound like very early 80s Andy Taylor. On the first two albums in particular Andy was power-chord king. If I'm chatting with my brother and Andy's name ever comes up, the first thing he will do is play some air guitar and go "aarr-aarr". We still call Andy "aarr-aarr" to this day.
Now I'm not suggesting Andy is a one-trick pony, but power chords are a huge part of his arsenal. And I happen to like them, for the main reason that power chords act as rhythm guitar which allows the bass to drive the song, which personally is my favourite sort of music. I love intricate basslines which lead a track, and that is one large reason why I particularly love Duran's first two albums.
SO FAR Dom has followed that blueprint. Maybe they're the only tracks with power chords on the album and it's just an aberration. But I think not, plenty of the other snippets had that classic Andy feel as well.
Randall you also said "He's not trying to be anyone besides Dom Brown who just happens to be a damn good guitarist". I agree, he is a damn good guitarist. But I just thought I'd listen to the music and see what it is like. There are 9 songs listed in the player at dombrown.com/pages/player/music.html, and here are my impressions of the guitar on those tracks:
1) Dr Feel - A Blues riff with wah effect, very Red Hot Chili Peppers.
2) Open Road - Harder grunge rock, sounds like JT's solo stuff.
3) Day Turned Back - Clean acoustic notes ala Stairway To Heaven.
4) Crocodile Tears - Hard Rock riff, very reminiscent of Andy Taylor's work on the first Power Station album.
5) Miss Marmalade - Acoustic notes into funk chords with wah effect - a nice track.
6) Chocolate Fever - Bluesy/Funk riff. A funky, cool song.
7) Vanity - Heavy rock guitar with reverb.
8) Can't Wait That Long - Acoustic notes, a very pretty song.
9) New Soul Brother - Heavy rock guitar with reverb and distortion, bluesy riff in the verse.
Now Randall how many times do you see the phrase "power chords" listed above. Actually bad question to ask you, having to count and comprehend and all, so I'll answer it for you. The answer is zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing.
Now fast forward to the Duran clips, and notice the use of power chords which incidentally were used often by Andy Taylor.
Now your quest is to explain to me how it DOESN'T appear that Dom is playing in a similar style to the guitar on Duran's first two albums. Is it really just a coincidence that somebody who doesn't normally favour a certain style of guitar playing mysteriously incorporates unintentionally into his latest work?
If you believe that then I've got this really beautiful bridge to sell you. Good price too.
